Between 1873 and 1916, more than 34,000 Hindustanis migrated from what was then British India to Suriname. The first immigrants arrived in Suriname aboard the ship Lalla Rookh. Obiaman Dey - (Obeah man day)

Cultural day in Suriname. Obia (Obeah) is a term used in the West Indies to refer to folk magic, sorcery, and religious practices derived from West Africa- believed to have originated from the Ashanti and Koromantin tribes. In Suriname specifically, there are people with origins from Ghana, Ivory Coast, Angola, Windward coast, Sierra Leone and more which have had a cultural influence in Suriname.
